BLM Mural — Asians for Black Lives Matter

In 2020, I unveiled a mural in Oakland, a vivid tapestry of cultural convergence. The piece intertwines African American and Asian symbolism, resonating with themes of solidarity and resilience. At its heart, the raised fist, an emblem of the Black Lives Matter movement, shares space with a graceful koi fish, symbolizing courage and perseverance. The koi’s fins are painted in alternating hues, reflecting the mutual support between communities.

Rooted in my own journey from China to the US, this work is a testament to the complex interplay of identity and belonging. It was featured in Painting the Streets: Oakland Uprising in the Time of Rebellion by NomadicPress in 2021, an invitation for viewers to reflect on shared aspirations and the pursuit of social justice.
